According to research by Nature Geoscience, a million years ago, there was no ice in the Arctic during summer. Researchers found in an analysis that a subpolar plankton species found in the waters of the Atlantic spread far into the Arctic Ocean during the last interglacial, 130,000 to 115,000 years ago, which meant that the Arctic was ice-free during summers.
